Andrew: Why I'm playing in Musical Chairs 2019

On Saturday 16 November, Andrew will be joining our orchestra of intrepid beginners and rusty amateurs for the fifth annual Musical Chairs fundraiser - this year in the spectacular surroundings of Westminster School in the heart of Central London. We spoke to Andrew to find out what is bringing him back for his second time, and why you should join him. Click here to out more about Musical Chairs and sign up today!

I think Orchestras for All is tremendous charity. It is increasingly recognised that arts and creative activities add so much to people’s skills and experiences. It is clear that schools are starting to realise that focusing for example on STEM subjects is missing the point when it comes to creating rounded individuals capable of offering employers the breadth of experience they are looking for (teamwork, initiative, creativity, general well being etc). Anything that supports and enables music for all is a good thing.

What a great opportunity to experience something musical that is new or different, in a non-intimidating, enabling environment
— Andrew

Last year I signed up for Musical Chairs. I chose trumpet which I have come to recently as an instrument. While I was a daunted at the thought of what I was signing up for, the realities of the day were great, and any fears turned out to be completely unjustified. I met so many great and friendly people. There was a large range of musical instrument proficiency. All levels were catered for. Several of the people I met have stayed friends. I now play in an orchestra through people I met, and I am now on the board of directors of a musical charity again because of links I established at Musical Chairs 2018.

If anyone is considering signing up for Musical Chairs 2019, I would say go for it. I can’t think of any downsides. I think the enabling of people to play an instrument as a complete novice is so good. There is something about getting stuck in one’s comfort zone. This is such a friendly environment in which to test the boundaries of what is possible. There is lots of mentoring available from experienced musicians on the day. What a great opportunity to experience something musical that is new or different, in a non-intimidating, enabling environment - thoroughly enjoyable.
